FAQ

COS Mastering – Frequently Asked Questions

What is audio mastering?

Audio mastering is the final stage of music production. It enhances your finished mix by optimizing clarity, balance, loudness, and overall sonic quality so your music sounds professional across streaming platforms, headphones, car stereos, clubs, and other playback systems.

Why is mastering important?

Mastering ensures your music is polished, consistent, and competitive with commercial releases. It helps improve translation across different listening environments while preparing your track for distribution on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and more.

What services does COS Mastering offer?

COS Mastering provides professional music mastering services for artists, producers, bands, and labels. Whether you’re releasing a single, EP, album, or commercial project, we help ensure your music is release-ready with clarity, depth, punch, and professional loudness.

What genres do you master?

We work with virtually all genres, including:

  • Hip-Hop & Rap
  • R&B
  • Pop
  • Rock
  • Country
  • Electronic & EDM
  • Jazz
  • Gospel
  • Folk
  • Alternative & Indie

Every project is approached individually to preserve the unique character of the music.

What file format should I submit?

For best results, submit:

  • WAV or AIFF files
  • 24-bit or 32-bit resolution preferred
  • Original sample rate (44.1kHz, 48kHz, 96kHz, etc.)
  • Stereo mix with no clipping
  • Leave approximately 3–6 dB of headroom

Avoid applying excessive limiting or mastering processing to your final mix before submission.

How do I send my music for mastering?

Simply upload your files through our submission process or contact us directly for transfer instructions. If your files are too large for email, we can provide alternative upload options.

How long does mastering take?

Turnaround times vary depending on project size and workload. Most single-track projects are completed within a few business days. Larger projects such as EPs and albums may require additional time.

What is stem mastering?

Stem mastering uses grouped audio files (such as vocals, drums, bass, and instruments) instead of a single stereo mix. This allows for more precise adjustments and greater control when addressing balance, clarity, and mix-related issues.

Do I need stem mastering or stereo mastering?

Stereo mastering is ideal when you’re happy with your mix and only need final polish. Stem mastering is recommended when certain elements need additional attention, such as vocals, low-end balance, or instrument separation.

Can mastering fix a bad mix?

Mastering can improve a mix, but it cannot completely repair major mixing problems. The best results come from a well-balanced mix before mastering begins. If significant issues are present, we may recommend mix revisions before mastering.

Will my music be optimized for streaming platforms?

Yes. We prepare masters that are optimized for today’s major streaming services, helping your music translate well across Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, and other platforms.

Can you master an entire album?

Absolutely. Album mastering includes additional attention to consistency, sequencing, spacing, and tonal balance between songs, creating a cohesive listening experience from start to finish.

Do you provide revisions?

Yes. We want you to be completely satisfied with your master. Revision policies can vary depending on the project, and we’ll discuss any necessary adjustments during the process.

How much does mastering cost?

Pricing depends on factors such as:

  • Number of songs
  • Stereo or stem mastering
  • Project complexity
  • Turnaround requirements

What if I’m not located in Atlanta?

No problem. We work with artists and producers remotely from anywhere. Files can be submitted online, and completed masters are delivered digitally.

Can I submit music that will be released on vinyl?

Yes. If your project is intended for vinyl, let us know before mastering begins. Vinyl releases have unique technical requirements that can be addressed during the mastering process.

Do you master podcasts, spoken word, or other audio projects?

Yes. In addition to music, we can help optimize podcasts, voice recordings, audiobooks, and other audio content for professional distribution.

What do I receive after mastering is complete?

You’ll receive professionally mastered audio files ready for distribution, typically in high-resolution WAV format. Additional formats can be provided upon request.

How do I get started?

Getting started is simple. Contact COS Mastering, submit your tracks, and we’ll guide you through the process. Our goal is to help your music sound its absolute best before release.
